WE HAD A DISCUSSION LAST NIGHT IN CLASS ABOUT BASKET INTERFERENCE DURING A FREE THROW THAT MADE US THINK A LITTLE...A1 IS SHOOTING THE 2ND SHOT OF A 2 SHOT FOUL, B1 JUMPS IN THE LANE WHEN THE BALL HITS THE RIM AND IS BOUNCING AROUND ON THE CYLINDER HE KNOCKS IT AWAY.....WHAT'S THE CALL. OBVIOUSLY YOU HAVE BASKET INTERFERNECE AND YOU SCORE THE BASKET, BUT IS IT A TECHICAL FOUL ALSO???? RULE 10 ARTICLE 11 SAYS YES
TAKE IT A STEP FURTHER...A2 COMMITS BASKET INTERFERENCE. YOU WAVE OFF THE BASKET AND CHARGE A2 WITH A TECHNICAL FOUL, GO SHOOT AT THE OTHER END.

You have it right (at least for NF rules).

As far as to why it is that way, I have no clue. I do believe that NCAA rules only call for the T when it is goaltending on the FT and not on basket interference. That makes sense to me. There is no reason a player should EVER commit GT on a FT. However, BI could happen and I expect it probably does occassionally.

I think the NFHS penalty is too severe. Makes many of us hesitant to call it -- but we have to. Many times free throws will bounce/rattle around, and the big guys get over anxious and go up and try to "help" it in. Tough spot to pull out a "T", but by rule we have no choice. We have to blow the whistle for the B.I., and once we've done that the "T" is automatic.
