Video Replay (in-game) helping or hurting officiating?

Is the ability to check video replay during a game helping or hurting the overall skill of officials?

A. It helps as people are aware that decisions can be checked and challenged and this are more certain of what they call and make more effort to get into positions for better looks.

B. No impact. The refs are the same people and they haven't changed.

C. It's hurting as people are now being lazy and relying on the monitor to catch what they don't and bail them out. Refs often won't even make a call on the court in a close situation (OOB, last second shot, Flagrant foul or not) and just head over to the monitor to watch it several times.

I don't think it is necessarily hurting their skill but they are wimping out and just depending on video. Some night, the video replay gear will fail and they'll be up a creek without a paddle since they were not paying close enough attention.

I'll go with a hybrid.....

The refs are the same people ..... their decisions can be checked .......

I just don't believe they watch the game better or get in better position. I think they all do that very conscienciously, regardless. But, Big Brother is there, almost instantaneously, to check their call.

I do not think replay is having any major impact on officiating any more than it did before. We just see more mistakes because of the HDTV and super slow motion that would be hard to see by the naked eye. And unlike the NFL there are only so many angles you can get in a closed space.

Peace

I can't imagine this being the case, at least for any officials on that level who want to stick around. I spoke to some of the guys at the Summit last summer and my impression from that was that video review would have two effects: 1) It would make them better and all the more motivated to get it right the first time so that video would serve more often to validate their calls rather than overturn them, and 2) It would show the general public that they aren't as wrong as often as they think they are.
The extent that these two things are turning out that way I understand can be up to debate.
But for any officials to say, "Who cares? We'll go to the video to get it right." That just doesn't have a valid ring to it. Unless an official wants to retire early.
