Whistles
So I wore out both of my CMG fox 40s and was looking into getting some more. Does anyone have a way to get them for less than $7.00 including shipping? Also, what are people's opinions on the whistles that have a way to keep track of the possession arrow? I have thought about one of those but am not sure. Thanks.

I keep track of the AP arrow in my head.
Just feel it is something an official needs to be able to do. |
Order them when you order something else to save shipping.
You often get one free at camps. Do NOT get the ones with the possession arrow (unless, perhaps, you are doing a steady stream of park district ball) |

I think the possession arrow whistle is a good idea. I think it would help you remembering the arrow in your head as well because it would get you thinking about when to switch it, etc. |
I missed that these were CMGs. I know that some who have them have a "replacement" that they use for the cushion. What it is, I don't know.

I use the CMG whistles myself.
I get about 40-50 games out of one before the cushion wears out to the point of annoyance... $7.00 / 50 games = $0.14 per game. Hardly worth worrying about from a cost standpoint. Just order/buy 3-4 of them next time you buy something else, and you'll be set for awhile. |
I use an Eclipse. Used the same whistle all season this year and then cracked out a brand new one for my final game.

Have always used the Fox 40 classic as well and they seem to last a good bit longer than the CMG ones. You might try local sporting good stores as well (Dick's, Academy, etc.) or smaller mom/pop places that may also do things like team uniforms for local baseball/basketball. I've been able to find the Fox 40 at both locations with no problems when/if needed.
Haven't used the possession arrow whistles, but I usually carry a spare during games that I switch between pockets to keep track. |

Anyone tried the Fox 40 Sonik Blast?
Just wondering if the supposed extra decibels are true/worth it. |

lifeguard whistles are the same, but not
If you get lifeguard whistles that are Fox 40 brand, they are functionally equivalent. They usually are a buck or two cheaper. But, the black ones usually have a white medical cross on the side, so I never used them for my high school games.
I did however, buy a couple of dozen of them for my teenage age referees for the twelve year old league. I added a little black marker and no one knew the difference. |
Amazon (prime)
$6.31 each w/ free shipping.

$6 on Amazon. Buy 6 of them and don't worry about it for a few years.

The Sonik sounds absolutely horrible. I refuse to use it officiating. I bought one and now use it to direct traffic at work. I prefer the Eclipse. It sounds the exact same as the classic IMHO. I always have a few spares on hand. |

I picked up a couple on a whim and until the next best thing comes along, it's my go-to whistle. |
For little kids games, I have a bag full of old Acme Thunderers (remember them, the Blackberry of officiating whistles?). I found that youngsters always covered their ears when I used the Eclipse.

I actually happen to like the sonic blast for large packed gyms. I find that it different sound cut through the crowd noise better.
