Maryland vs. Louisville (Women's)

That's a foul, and it's not even close.

MathReferee Wed Apr 02, 2014 03:12pm

Foul.

Announcers gave the ol', "That's just a loose ball" line or something like that.

Raymond Wed Apr 02, 2014 03:19pm

That's definitely a foul. I'm sure the announcers probably said something stupid.

JRutledge Wed Apr 02, 2014 03:26pm

It might be a foul, but not a slam dunk. Both players jumped toward the ball. The Louisville player just took the brunt of the contact. I have no problem if someone no-called this.

Peace

APG Wed Apr 02, 2014 03:35pm

I would have a play on.

rockyroad Wed Apr 02, 2014 03:36pm

Looks like a good call to me. L'ville player is moving toward the endline and the Maryland player is moving across the key, causing the contact. Contact was enough to knock the L'ville player down. Seems pretty easy.

Yep.

MD Longhorn Wed Apr 02, 2014 04:13pm

Hmmm... I'm in the minority here - I don't see this as a foul, at least not from just this one angle.

bballref3966 Wed Apr 02, 2014 04:22pm

Definitely a foul. I just requested the video to make sure I wasn't the only one who thought Doris Burke was naive.

I agree....50/50 ball with both players jumping towards each other from equally advantageous positions.

That said, I could just as easily make a case for a foul on either player.

You could pretty much do anything here and be "right".

Womens: Foul

Mens: Play on

Welcome to the world of women's basketball !!! You know all those jump balls you are going to call in AAU the next two months in girls games, that you wouldn't call in a men's game. Well that is a foul that we call because it is women's basketball, but we would no call that in a guy's game.....

I think more people would want a foul here. Now if that is right or not is another situation. But I think calling a foul actually penalizes the bigger player because they are bigger. The Maryland player actually got to the ball first. That is why I would be uncomfortable calling a foul here (with the benefit of replay of course).

Peace

Rut -

But in a men's game hs varisty or above you wouldn't even think of having a whistle would you......

Multiple Sports Wed Apr 02, 2014 05:34pm

Hey Ghost ?????

Not likely. Then again I worked only one regular season girl's high school game this year. I am not the best judge of the difference. I just know that if you breathe on a girl wrong in a basketball game many coaches, fans or officials feel there should be a foul.

Peace

Multiple Sports Wed Apr 02, 2014 05:52pm

Agree 100%...... I even had a hs girls coach say this year, "he's a guys referee, he will let you push more than the other officials." I took that as a compliment.:):):)

ballgame99 Thu Apr 03, 2014 09:44am

I had nothing based on the initial angle, but that endline angle shows red coming over into white and creating the contact. Good call.

Ghost already replied.

But it was invisible so you couldn't see it.

That's nonsense. I don't call boys any differently than I call girls. They *do* play differently and force me into some calls I wouldn't have to make in boys games, though.

Worked 53 HS games this year, 12 of them girls.

JetMetFan Thu Apr 03, 2014 06:23pm

I'm the reverse of Rich. I had 48 HS games this past season and 38 of them were GV. There was a difference in how the games were called (not on held balls...) but that was mainly because we follow NCAAW guidelines in my NYC GV games. In 2012-13 I called things pretty much the same regardless of who was playing.

STFD Thu Apr 03, 2014 07:52pm

I've got a foul here, but maybe that's just because I don't know how to stay out of the game.
