Finland! Sucker Punch (Video)

Women’s Basketball Player Kicked Off Team After Horrific Sucker Punch During*Game | Extra Mustard - SI.com

So yeah... It is the third player who falls down.
good no call on the flop. Actually I'd have T'd the player up for that.
Miss call on the layup. That was a cheap shot.

Notice that these are the same two players involved in the contact in the first two seconds of the video clip. Obviously, she felt wronged by that action and was getting her revenge.

All I want to know is who filmed this on 1940's cameras and had it digitized. Even cheap cellphones do better video than that, even if you compress it.

As it is, it is almost impossible to tell who was who. The flop and punch were visible, however. I think the middle fall was a good nocall, however.

The calling official gave the UNS signal.

If this isn't a DQ foul, I don't know what is.

His signal should have been similar to a TD signal, but with two fists, thumbs out.

Seems soccer-flopping is migrating to European basketball. All that rolling around? Ugh. (The punched girl notwithstanding, of course.)

+1

Or you can use the baseball heave-ho signal and not that ridiculous FIBA signal

This was my big question out of all of this. Tough to tell if the shooter partially had weak legs after her shot and was going down anyway (think kids rec ball). Or if that big hip sent her tumbling.

In the interest of protecting shooters, and because these aren't little kids, I'd be inclined to whistle blue on this. Maybe being there, and watching this through a non-1940s lens, would give a better idea of how hard the contact was initiated. But from what we have here, I'd think a foul on the defender -- who jutted her hip out well after the shot, and not just as a late arrival, you'll notice -- would be an OK call.

Am I whistling in the dark on this?

Brutal.

Ya' gotta tip your hat to the players and benches for not clearing and creating a melee.
