Double dribble?

Just saw this in our state tourney. A1 dribbling above the arc then picks up his dribble with both hands. B1 knocks the ball out of his hands into the air. A1 grabs the ball out of the air without moving his feet. Can he have a new dribble?

9-5 ...

A player shall not dribble a second time after his/her first dribble has ended,
unless it is after he/she has lost control because of:
ART. 1 . . . A try for field goal.
ART. 2 . . . A touch by an opponent.
ART. 3 . . . A pass or fumble which has then touched, or been touched by,
another player.

Even though I've seen it called and even had Varsity/State Tourney level partners even reach 50' on a play right in front of me to call a violation on plays like that, it is legal. The coach challenged his call...we talked about it and he stayed with his original call. In the locker room after the game, I asked him about it and he asserted that it had to hit the floor after being knocked away before A1 could dribble again!:confused::(

Of course he can. What happened in the scenario you are describing? A1 started a second dribble and got called for DD?

No they got it right. My brain just said that didn't look right but I couldn't think of a reason for it to be illegal, so I wanted to verify I wasn't missing something. Thanks.
