Whistle or not
Officials Manual pg 21 says to sound whistle when play is about to begin only following a charged time out an intermission or an unusual delay. Do any areas regularly sound whistle following a substitution?
|
Sometimes, based on how long the substitution has taken.

I've been doing a lot of games with 1st and 2nd year officials this year, as we have quite a few new members in our assn. Our Assignor asked me to help with the on-court mentoring, by taking more Soph/JV games, to work with them. Last week, my partner, a 1st year official, was blowing his whistle every time he had a throw-in. I mentioned it to him at halftime, but he still couldn't break the habit.
When I told him that the NBA does that, and they have their reason(s), he was finally able to overcome the tendency. |
Not regularly. Most of the time it's, player in; player out; glance at partner(s); administer the throw in.

No, not unless there's an appreciable delay. There's little consistency in this area on endline frontcourt throw-ins, though. Some whistle, some don't. It was downright bizarre when one of my partners over Christmas whistled and the head coach told him that it wasn't a proper mechanic and to please stop it because it throws off his players. I stayed out of that one. |

Same guy told me he'd send me the film after the FIRST foul we called, BTW. Good times. |

A T in this instance is way over the top, imo. |
