Kansas at Kansas St.

Why did the officials blow the whistle with 0.1 on the clock at the end of regulation and then simply proceed to overtime?

Raymond Tue Feb 11, 2014 12:09am

What action was going on at the time?

Kansas has just stolen the ball in the backcourt and was throwing up a 3/4 court try.

Also.....was the rebound putback by Wiggins a legal play? Drove to basket, missed layup and his momentum carried him OOB. He came back in and rebounded (first to touch after being OOB) and scored. Heck of an athletic play but was it legal?

You must be coming over from another forum. ;)

There are no "first to touch" restrictions for players coming inbounds, except on throw-ins.

You know a Blue Raider joined the ranks of the NBA officials this season? He used to post here.

Yes, it's legal. This isn't the NFL.

My only guess is it was inadvertent. Maybe he thought the horn should've gone off.

Some of you may be able to browse to the play here: ESPN3 -- Kansas vs. Kansas State

So how do they then just proceed to OT? There was still time on the clock when the whistle blew.

Are you sure it was the game clock and not the electronic representation of the game clock you were looking at?

TriggerMN Tue Feb 11, 2014 08:36am

It was an inadvertent whistle. Officials huddled, and decided to wipe away the last 0.1 seconds and go to overtime. Just think if the 60-footer had gone in though...they would have had to cancel it with the whistle.

How exactly do you know that?
Were you present at the game? Did you speak with the officials?
Btw the point of my original post was that the rules don't permit the officials to just ignore any time remaining following the whistle.

Watch the ESPN clip. The clock on top of backboard shows 0.1 left.

Their whistle came before the release? If so, find it hard to believe the shot would have counted anyway b/c they use PTS, which stops the clock immediately upon the whistle being blown.

I believe you are thinking when a player under his own volition runs OOB and then becomes the first player to touch the ball.

Your own question answers itself.
