Foul Fest

I did a girls varsity game on Saturday we did it 3 man.we were in the double bonus in the first half for both teams. obviously these teams did not like one another. The schools were about three hours apart so no local rivalry.

The second half started out worse than the first half did, we were in the bonuses before the end of the 3rd quarter. Fouls included a technical on the coach and intentional shortly after that on one her players. 5 players from the visiting team fouled out and a total of 47 fouls were called.

I never saw so many players on the floor throughout a game. They took flopping to a new high or art form. literally on one play I had three players fall onto the floor with no contact whatsoever and as the ball went across the lane a girl dover for it she too end up on the floor and a player attempting a shot tripped over top of her. It was ugly.

this was a varsity contest, what's the most fouls you've ever seen in a varsity game?

47 is a lot, but many games have had more than that.

Yesterday. Girls varsity. Almost bonus, and double bonus, in first period. At the end of the first period, home team six fouls, road team nine fouls.

Not even close

72 is the most that I've seen. 64 is the most for a HS varsity game for which I was part of the officiating crew.

You only had 47 fouls! In the Ancient Days (and by Ancient Days I mean mid-1970's), two years in a row I had the Univ. of Miami at Florida International Univ. game in women's college basketball, and my partner and I called 56 fouls in each game. And in the late 1980's I had a boys' varsity game in which my partner and I called 60 fouls including one DF (back when a DF was when two opponents committed PF against each other at the same time) and one IPF.

I had a GV a few yrs back (part of a B/G double header) and we were in the bonus with 1:30 left in the first quarter.

We go to the locker room and the BV officials are chuckling as they know we have a train wreck.

2nd half, we were in the bonus EVEN EARLIER in the 3rd quarter. They just never adjusted to our calls....... :(

Makes for a long, long game.

Not to brag, but this Friday I worked a BV game with about 23 fouls. It was glorious I tell you.

Yes, I've been in the 60s before. A foul every 30 seconds is not a fun game for anyone.

I worked one earlier this season with 13 total (9 and 4). They could've called their own.

Not sure of the count, but.....

I have dreams about sub 60min games. I heard such a game exists, but I'm starting to think its just a story to keep me going.

I'm not sure how many fouls were called but I worked a GV game in the 2010-11 season where we shot 80 FTs (they made 47). Believe me, we needed every last one of those FTs because the kids were hammering each other.

Block, block, block. It usually stops then.

That only avoids the problem. I prefer to talk, then whack.

Terp, how does your part of Rome feel about whacking flops?

(Oh, I've been in the 60s for fouls once or twice.)

Camron Rust Mon Feb 10, 2014 12:28pm

The most I remember and know the foul count was 55 fouls.....with about 40 of them on one team and 15 on the other.

I think my fewest was about 12 or 13 for the game.

zm1283 Mon Feb 10, 2014 02:21pm

I had JV game last week before a Varsity game. 52 minutes total. They played six minute quarters. I think we called six fouls in the first half and maybe 10 in the second half.

On the flip side I had a girls JV game a few weeks ago that went OT and lasted over an hour and a half. I don't think the clock ran for more than 15 seconds at at time. Out of bounds, AP throw-in, foul, timeout....you name it and it happened a lot.

I'll verify that the 60 minute game does exist albeit rarely. We had a 46-4 blowout with only about ten fouls called the entire game and one the second half. Hoe team was a smal Christian school with maybe 5 of the seven girls being foreign exchange students from Rwanda. They got beat handily but appeared to have a good time being able to participate in such a high level of basketball. The visitors were gracious the second half and did not press or play defense really for that matter, thus only one foul called. They must of instituted a ten pass rule because they passed a lot before they were allowed to take a shot. But we were exactly a hour on time. It was awesome.

Had a girls varsity game similar to this recently. A total blowout. The winning teams coach decided to not contest any shot attempts by the other team in the second half. He said, "let them shoot and work on rebounding".

I'm not sure why 46-4 would ever be classified as awesome.

I had a 54 foul JV boys game last Tuesday with multiple technical fouls.
