Do we allow this in Fed basketball?

This is a baseball interp for this year. Would Fed allow the player to participate in basketball with beads in his/her hair?

One of the players for the visiting team has beads in his hair. The home coach complains to the plate umpire that this is jewelry and the player may not participate in the game. RULING: Hair styles are as varied as players. One is not preferred over another with regard to baseball rules. A player with cornrows is as compliant as one with a flattop. Beads that are in the cornrows are considered to be a “hair adornment,” not jewelry. High school baseball rules have not concerned themselves with players’ hair styles or adornment. The beads are legal and the player may participate.

Not allowed.

Beads are specifically addressed in the rule.

No, beads or other hard objects are not permitted in the hair.

Had an AAU game some time ago where a female was told she couldn't play because of the beads in her hair. She had it done for an upcoming wedding or something, and the mom went balistic. She had to be escorted away and my partner and I were called many names I can't repeat, to include being a racist. Not fun:(

Similar reaction in a volleyball game I was coaching - player showed up with earrings in. "The holes are brand new, she's not allowed to take them out." Sorry, Mom - she can't play with them in. "BUT SHE'S REQUIRED TO KEEP THEM IN BY A DOCTOR!!!!!" Fine, mom... but she's not playing.

I have had this one as well. Probably more common than the hair beads.

Yup, been there. No one is telling her she has to take them out. She can leave them in.

I had a boys JV game a couple years ago where a player had beads in his hair. When I told him and the coach he couldn't play with them in, the coach nearly blew a gasket because "Nobody has said anything all year" which considering his reaction, just may very well have been true.

"Well, Mom, your daughter/son has a choice. S/He can choose to remove the earrings, or s/he can choose not to participate in this game. Makes no difference to me which choice s/he makes."

Then walk away.

Why are you even wasting time having a conversation with a parent or even the player for that matter. Tell the coach the player in question does not have to take the earrings out, but she cannot play with them in. Let the coach tell the player. When the mom starts giving you grief tell game management she needs to be escorted out of the gym.

Reading is fundamental, Johnny.

I had this occur in a youth game last year. I told the coach during warm-ups that a young girl (maybe 8 years old) couldn't play because she had beads (many, many beads) in her hair. He told her mom who went nuts, and I gave the standard by-rule safety response. We played the first half and the girl sat. At halftime, game management came to me and said the girl can play. I explained that for safety and liability reasons, no, she cannot play. He said it was his decision and she could play. So I sat down and started taking my shoes off. He asked what I was doing. I said I'm protecting myself. If you insist she be allowed to play then you're doing it without me. I wrote the explanation in the scorebook, told both coaches what was going on, grabbed my jacket, and left. The youth director called me later that day and asked what the hell happened. I told her. Being an official herself, she just said thanks and from that point forward no players were allowed to wear beads or anything else in their hair.

You snuck the C word in there. Had to breakout the dictionary, wasn't sure what it meant. Never having been on that side of the sideline, I did not realize it is a refers to the dickhead whining, crying, and begging for calls all game and that is required to stay in their cage/box during the game. Of course, this only refers to the ones doing basketball. I don't know a thing about volleyball, so I cannot comment on what those people do during those games.
