Whack at end of 4th Qtr

I am sweating..Boys JV and tough competitive game..score tied 37 all and A1 drives the basket for the win and misses shot. Time expires..Coach A jumps off bench looking for foul..I was the Lead and had a no call.

My young partner whacks the coach...

I started the OT with 2ft by B and the ball opposite table side.

3 Questions:

1) Did I start the OT correctly? My thought process was game was tied at end of regulation and technical foul ends with a throw-in by the offended team.

2) Is there ever a circumstance where as the R you would over rule a call of this nature? Or the young buck has to live with it?

3) Coach was bending my ear about being whacked by my partner..he was calm and I listened and let him vent but did not say much..Is there anything I should have said?

Thanks!

NCAA rules different on starting OT in this situation?

Yes, "Coach I am not discussion the technical foul situation." And then walk away.

Peace

1. Yes. As long as you gave the arrow to A once it was at B's disposal for the throw in.

2. Hell no. Frankly, the coach should know better. I'm of the opinion that a few quick Ts actually help us all in the long run.

3. Shut him down. He's playing divide and conquer.

In NCAA-M the OT would start with 2 FT by team B, followed by a jump ball.

The Technical foul is how you begin overtime??? For some reason I thought that a Technical foul at the end of the game, could decide the game and not force overtime?

My thought would be that this encourages coaches and players to keep their cool at the end of a close game.

????

That's only if the game is over and the points from the free throws would have an effect on the outcome. Ex: The winning team does something unsporting after the horn.

5-6-2 Exception 4

If the score is tied and the TF happens after the 4th quarter ends, the foul will be enforced to start overtime.

If the score is NOT tied, the TF becomes part of the 4th quarter. The shots are attempted if they could affect the final score.

So, if the team is leading by 1 and the coach is whacked after the buzzer, the free throws are part of the 4th, and his team can lose in regulation.

But if the game is tied and the coach is whacked after the buzzer, the free throws are part of OT, so his team can't lose in regulation.

Strange but true, right?

Please, read 5-6 Exceptions 3 and 4. And Case Book 5.6.2 has several scenarios that may be of interest.
