So, if the team is leading by 1 and the coach is whacked after the buzzer, the free throws are part of the 4th, and his team can lose in regulation.

But if the game is tied and the coach is whacked after the buzzer, the free throws are part of OT, so his team can't lose in regulation.

Strange but true, right?

Please, read 5-6 Exceptions 3 and 4. And Case Book 5.6.2 has several scenarios that may be of interest.

True so if you had a guy that was automatic from the line you would perhaps prefer to be down by 1 then tied.

As long as you have faith in the other coach blowing the game for his team by getting a T.

I was saying in the event of the T being given you would prefer to be down one then tied. Of course you wouldn't want to be down one and hope for the T.

The proper wording to use is "than tied," not "then tied."

Maybe he wanted to be tied up after he was down one.
