I read Part 1 and now reading Part 2, thought I would share.

Errata
 

In Part 2, the author's point #12 has some phraseology that lacks rules support:
3. The defense must have obtained their position on the floor prior to the ball handler making their commitment to the air or the starting of the shooting motion (this is continuation). If a defensive player moves into the path of the offensive player after the shooting motion has begun the foul is on the defense regardless of whether they are set during the contact or not.
Other than that, I'd welcome this as a two-part feature in our local newspaper anytime. :)

How about #5!!! That sentence is not entirely accurate.

I agree that it is wrong. The dribble has to start (ie the ball released) before the pivot foot is raised. The pivot foot can be lifted as long as the player passes the ball of shoots before it returns to the floor, but not to start a dribble.

While I applaud the idea and intent of the article, it's overly-simplistic in asserting that coaches complaining about and questioning calls won't possibly have an effect on anything after that point. They generally do it for a reason and with a purpose, and it's not to get the call that was just made reversed.

The ref in Part 2 says, "If I hear someone yell “3 seconds!” – I start my count over." If I was a coach and knew this was his "policy", I'd yell "3 seconds" when my team is on offense and my player is in the lane. :rolleyes:

You are correct and too often it works.
