Things We Talk About That Actually Happen

Had a pretty uneventful small church school BV tonight. But did have 2 things happen that get discussed from time-to-time:
  1. Tech for 6 players on the court. I'm administering front court endline throw-in after OOB violation immediately following a free throw. Subs come in. I initially notice 6 defensive players, so I hold off on throw-in. Take my eyes off the court for a second, look back and only see 5 defenders. Look to my partner, trail tableside, and he doesnt have his hand up, so administer throw-in. After a couple seconds of play, I notice 6 defenders again, so I blow my whistle for the T. Even after blowing my whistle, my partner still doesn't know that we have too many players, even as the extra starts walking off the court right in front of him...LOL
  2. White undershirt worn by green player. I notice it at halftime but player hasn't played and he goes to sit at the end of the bench. With about 30 second left in 3rd quarter, he checks into the game. I cut him off and tell him and his coach he can't participate with the white t-shirt. I also tell coach and player to make sure the change is done out in the hallway. Kid runs out in the hallway, takes off illegal undershirt, but never makes it back into the game. Kinda felt bad he missed out on his only opportunity of the night.

Also, I've gone to using my whistle on the first horn. Immediately after Rich or someone brought it up in a thread, I worked back-to-back D3 games with 20+ year college vets who both employed the same tactic. If they are doing it, I figured maybe it something that would be beneficial to me. It is my perception that since I've been doing it that teams are getting out of their huddles faster. Although I did work a game the other night where the visiting team had an assistant who made sure the HC starting breaking up the huddle right after the first horn. I just started looking at him when the first horn went off, he would nod at me, then tell his HC is was time to go.

I would ask whether your partner noticed the undershirt kid before you did but since he didn't see the 6th player leaving the court in front of him... :D

Whew!! I wasn't BNR's partner last night. :D

Being one at some point is however on my officiating bucket list.

PS - in a regular game.

Personally, I find the uniform violations tougher to catch with the boys, than the girls. The boys to have more bands and sleeves covered by their warm-up attire than the girls and their ear rings and hair pins.

So, as BNR states, I have caught boys uniform violations much later in the game too.

I would still address it at that time. "If you plan to play tonight, you'll need to take off that undershirt."

Or, "You can't play wearing that undershirt". After that, it's up to him.
