Had this happen in a JV girls game the other day.
Inbound from the backcourt endline, I'm new lead. Inbounds pass is tipped and goes out of bounds, and neither my partner or I know who touched it. Partner eventually rules it as Team B's ball, and I'm not sure why. I go over to him to find out what's going on... he says "White #15 told me she touched it last, so that's what we're going with." Ok, then, fair enough. A couple plays later, I've got a foul call. I report it, and coach politely asks "how'd the other team get the ball on the inbounds play?" "Well, coach, your player told us she hit it out of bounds" (sputtering). "I don't care about that! This isn't about being honest!" All righty then. |

The best line I heard from a Coach was at the end of the first half. His team committed 15 fouls (according to him) and his team's opponent had committed two fouls. He asked me: "What I am supposed to tell my players?" My response was: "Stop fouling."

The best I've heard wasn't the phrase itself, but the situation...
Boys JV, visiting team gets 6 fouls in the first quarter because home team is driving a lot. No fouls on home team yet. Score is pretty close. Finally there's a foul on the home team called by my partner, and the home coach bellows out "CALL IT BOTH WAYS!!!". Again, that was the FIRST foul called on his team. |

Usually, if there is a big discrepancy in the count, there is a fairly obvious reason for it, if one cares to see it. Several years ago, I had a game at the home of a very highly ranked GV team playing a considerably weaker opponent. The good team was up-tempo and pressure all over the court, all the time.
End of the first quarter: Home 23 Visitors 7 Fouls: Home 7 Visitors 0 Complaints: none

Coach: "You gotta make some calls at the other end!"
I replied: "I will in the second half!" Coach: "Okay!" And he turned and sat down . . . Assistant coach, after he smiled and rolled his eyes: I'll explain it to him later."
