During the many years I've officiated, I've had many discussions with those who read 4-7-2 b - "If contact occurs on the torso of the defensive player, the dribbler is responsible for the contact." who insert "on the front of the torso" and even more narrowly, "in the center of the front of the torso" into their play-calling on such a block/charge call.
Such narrow interpretation seems to disregard the immediately preceeding sentence stating "If a guard has obtained a legal guarding position, the player with the ball must get his/her head and shoulders past the torso of the defensive player."
This call seems to fit with that perception.
That said, I see this play as unquestionably a charge.

I think you are right on here, Rob...

Some officials HAVE TO BE seeing it this way to call a block on a play like this.

Just because a dribbler happens to run into the SIDE/OR A LITTLE OFF CENTER of a defender who has LGP...and displaces the defender, to the ground in this case...I just don't get it why we have officials, all over the nation, that call this a block.

If This Happened In My High School Game...

Player control foul.

Did you happen to see the FB discussion? Oddly, it's about 50/50 over there. I just don't get it, especially since this is one of the few threads I've ever seen here where there is essentially zero discussion.

There only seems to be two or three people in that thread arguing for a block and none of them seem to understand what LGP actually entails.

If it's the same group I'm a part of, you're right. It's really frustrating to read that thread where one vocal guy is trying to put up an argument that doesn't really make sense.

I recently became a member of that group as well. I commented to this individual that he needs to read 4-22-2 & 4-22-3. I don't believe he has ever actually read that part of the book.
