I could not believe what I saw!

Our cable system as part of its own channels has two local sports channels like ESPN and ESPN2, they are both HD channels, and with a 46 inch HD screen I do not miss much, .

When the Kansas State-Michigan football game went to half time I switched over to BCSN1 which was showing a delayed broadcast of the 3rd place game in a local H.S.'s boys' VAR holiday tournament. One school was a Div. IV (smallest schools in Ohio) and the other school was a Class C (2nd smallest schools in Michigan).

I wasn't too happy with the positioning of whoever was in the C and T positions: C never went deeper than the top of the key and whoever was in the T barely went past the Division Line by 3 or 4 feet (half the time you couldn't see the T in the screen).

Now for the Play: A1 is dribbling toward his basket from the C's Side of the FT Lane. While A1 is still dribbling the ball, B2 (remember B2's number) pushes A3 (remember A3's number) in the back (The L makes the call.). B2's contact with A3 sends A3 into A1 who has stopped his dribble after B2's foul and A1 starts to release the ball when A3 slams into him. The Ball goes through the basket.

Now for the Ruling: The L scores the basket, ! Reports the foul was committed by B3 (did you remember B2 and A3's numbers), , !! And awards A1 one FT, , , !!! Which he makes.

Oy...

At least it was in HD. Or maybe that just makes it worse?

Did they get together as a crew and discuss all of this before reaching a decision?

There was no crew discussion from what I could see on the screen.

Maybe he had a completely different foul from the one you saw?

Oh no he didn't. The only player who contacted A1 was A3 and A3 was pushed into A1 by B2. Remember, B2's fouling of A3 occurred before A1 has started his Act of Shooting and A3, which made the Ball Dead. A1's momentum caused him to shoot the Ball and A3 made contact with A1 because B2 pushed A3 into A1. Also remember that the official scored the basket and A1 went to the line for one FT. There were no other players close to A1, A3, and B2. Even the talking heads were confused.

The Eyes Have It ...

Wouldn't it be great if we all could officiate our games in three dimensional, high definition, with slow motion replay, that makes it feel like we're right on the court? Wait? I'm being told ... What? Already have three dimensional, and high definition? And we are on the court? What about slow motion replay? What? Sometimes the end of the game? Never mind.

We had Mark Uyl (MichiganHSAA Assistant Director) come and speak to our association earlier this month and he brings in videos to discuss and they are all from semis and finals from Ohio and Michigan. Though this one was not shown, he did show a semi final game where after a time out with team A down by three with a few seconds, scored a three to tie the game and go into overtime. The only problem was Team A had 6 players on the floor and no one noticed, officials, players, or coaches. I believes team B did end up winning. Mark said the problem was the officials were instructed to get the ball in play quickly after commercials and both teams were slow to get back to the floor, so the throw in was rushed. MHSAA keeps promising a video library, but every time I check, all they have is hockey, even when you check basketball.

The game was played in Ohio and the officials were OhioHSAA registered officials.

If you are talking about the game I am talking about, I believe it was 2006 Class B Semi-final between Detroit Renaissance and Flint Southwestern.

Mark pointed out where he was standing court side and did notice the 6th player.
