How many "T"s will you have at the end of the season?
How many "T"s will you have at the end of the season.
Let's make a prediction. A few years ago I had over 20. Last year, maybe 5 or 6. Keep in mind I referee about 70 or more games a year. I m going to guess 4 for myself. Hoping for none. But I have never had a season with Zero. Have you have had a season with Zero "T"s? |
Clarification: Strictly unsportsmanlike Ts, or all?

No Bell Curve For Coaches ...

Had 4 last yr, 2 on coaches, 2 on a players. None so far this year, hopefully none at end of year, realistically probably will have some though.
|
Scholastically, probably just a few. But, I do some local WRECK Ball, so if this yr holds to form, probably ~ 10. I usually don't have to hand too many out.
|
Well with the emphasis for the coaching box in my state, I would have said 5 and a couple of those would have been administrative in nature. But I am thinking I could have 8-10. I hope it is not that high, but I have one already on a player for unsporting behavior.
Peace |

One so far this year -- taunting on a player after a dunk. Like Jeff, I thought I would have more given the state's "zero tolerance" policy on the coaching box. I'll go with 4, in an estimated 100 V and NCAAW games. |
I'm really going out on a limb here and saying I will have zero. ;)
|
Not sure why anyone would want to predict this.
|
I am at 2 through my first 13 games, so that would average out to about 8 before the season is over...Thankfully my schedule will be light as I follow my son around with baseball or I might be at 8 already.
Funny that you guys are in states with zero tolerance policies on coaches boxes. In my neck of the woods and in my pool they don't enforce the coaches box at all!! Serious, coach can go from mid court to baseline with no one saying a peep and the boxes aren't marked either. I asked and they just told me they don't get in a huff over it. Also, no "X" marking the official scorer, scorers don't wear the striped shirt, no "T"s for books not being done at 10 minutes (sometimes it is closer to 5 before they are ready) and I had to make 2 kids take off tights the other day in game #7 for them. I said "is this the first time you have been told this?" "yes sir"...smdh |

My former partner and I would always have a contest and the most technicals was the winner. Of course, neither of us wanted to win and he always won.
One year he thought he had me. I was up 2-0 and we were at the end of the season. Maybe the last regular season game, he called three in about 20 seconds and proudly took home the trophy as usual. |

And I'm with BNR on this one - why try and predict how many T's you'll call? That is just something that is unpredictable. |
Unless it has changed a great deal since my medical related "vacation" (I will find out in a few months), the coaching box here was never a point of emphasis. As long as they were coaching and not providing a running commentary on the officiating we were told to let it be. To their credit, most coaches knew that if we told them "watch the box coach" that was a tacit way of saying "Uh...shut you pie hole".
I have always felt that a T on a coach can usually be avoided with good game management, working hard, being consistent and communicating. If you ignore a coach things usually get worse. Don't get into a long debate with them but acknowledge them and, when possible, answer questions with a couple of words. There are some jerks that need a T and sometimes a coach wants a T...if you are observant to the situation you can usually tell. To some degree the same can be said about unsporting Ts on players. If you are watching and nip the chirping in the bud when it starts most of the Ts you eventually hand out would be avoided. Just my opinion... |

I'm already at 4 through about 8 games. |

I am cracking down a little on coaches though...can't take that anymore. |
Where is the rule that says the book has to be ready at 10 minutes? Last I checked, the teams need to supply the scorer with their rosters before the 10 minute mark. When the scorer decides to put them in the book is irrelevant.

I've had three so far in 15 games. Two were coaches failing to notify me of a number change and that player entered the game. The other one was a technical for breaking the plane on an inbounds play.

As for coaching box issues, our state has made a bigger deal about that rule based on the interpretation of the administrators of our sports. It has become a major issue that because of what happened last year it was felt we as officials were not doing a good job enforcing. And after all it is a rule that we kind of ignored or looked the other way. I am totally guilty there, but because of the behavior of many coaches, this is something that the IHSA wanted to be cracked down on. As far as I am concerned coaches did this to themselves. I am just doing what is asked and that reason alone will probably put me in a situation to call more Ts. I have yet to call one for a coach being out of the box, but I could see it happening. It happen in my first game this year by a partner and the coach was not saying a word to us, but that is how the state wants it called. It is a new day on many levels. Peace |
I have been lucky so far JRut. In the handful of HS games I have done, coaches have stayed in box the entire time. I think for the most part, they got the message from the IHSA loud and clear. Before this season, I was much like you. If the guy was out of his box coaching, I wasn't really that concerned.

A Realist With Rose Colored Glasses On ...

I know. I know. It's somehow a little different than any other foul. So, maybe we discuss it for a day, or two, with our colleagues, maybe at an adult beverage establishment. Or, maybe we post about it here, on the Forum. But keeping track of them over an entire season, that a little bit overboard. It's not a contest. |
I will have as many Ts as I find necessary during my games. Hopefully no more and no less. Whether it's 2 or 22, I really don't care.
(And anyone that says they're just like any other fouls are fooling themselves. They aren't.) |

Some officials call too many, some call too few. But we had one official toss the same coach twice in 2 games. Here we have to write a report when we call any "T". ( That's on the West Virginia side ) we are a dual state board. |
As many as I need.
I've whacked 3 coaches this far I think. A handful of players also. |

Had my first one of the season tonight, JV-B, two DOGs, both plane, both in the first quarter. (The second one resulted in a loud yell from the defender the instant I whistled.)
Coaches and kids do an overall good job in these parts to be sportsmanlike. If I have three unsportsmanlike Ts this season, that's a lot. |
Three in Tuesday's GV game brings me up to four on the season in a week and a half.
#1 (last week) = HC tells A6 to go in for one of her teammates. A6 enters the game. Unfortunately she decided to do this while the ball was in play. #2 (Tuesday) = A1 has her shot blocked and says "s--t" loud enough for me and her opponents to hear it. NYC has a no tolerance rule regarding profanity, so... #3 (ibid) = Different A1 thinks she's fouled on a drive. The ball heads the other way. B1 is fouled on her way to the basket. A1 says, "Oh, but you see that, right?" #4 (ibid) = Yet another A1 thinks she was hit on the arm while taking a shot. As A1 is heading towards her team's bench at the start of a time out she says, "I got hit on my f---ing arm!" Interestingly, scenario #1 was the second time I've been in a game where that's happened this season. The other was an NCAAW game. My R tried "not to see it" but the girl almost ran him over. |
