There are probably some legitimate reasons to run up a score that we may not know about. In a local YMCA league, the teams were divided into two divisions based on a seeding tournament. One of the teams had a very good seeding tournament and was placed into the upper division. Some of the other coaches that had played his team suggested that he might want to voluntarily move down to the second division where he could be more competitive. After a couple of the teams were nice and only beat his team by around 20 points, he was given another opportunity to drop to the second division. After he refused to consider the possibility that his team was in a division over their heads, the second to last place team quit being nice and drilled his team by over 40 points. I still don't know if he got the message and agreed to switch divisions.
