over and back

If a player is dribbling up court and his feet enter the front court but the ball is still in the back court and he then retreats to the back court is that considered an over and back violation?

Welpe Thu Aug 22, 2013 10:42am

No. When dribbling from back court to front court, both of the dribbler's feet and the ball must go beyond the division line before the dribbler attains front court status. In this case he still has back court status so there is no violation.

No, a player dribbling from back court to front court must have three points in the front court before he has established front court status. Until that point, he is still in the back court.

If he stops dribbling, however, with both feet in the FC, he has established FC status and BC restrictions are in place.

It's the same for the NBA as well. And I believe this was one of the rule changes in FIBA last year so as to match NFHS/NCAA/NBA.
