When will they learn?

I was watching a Cold Case rerun that was filmed in 2004. They were showing a scene from a HS game in 1987. Of course, this is fiction. After a timeout following a made basket, the trail official hands the ball to A1 to inbound on the end line. As soon as he hands him the ball, the game clock starts. A2 scores the winning basket just before the clock expires.

If memory serves (and the odds aren't with me on that at my age), the clock starting at the wrong time in this clip is about the 1000th error I've seen on television regarding sports rules. Of course, I started watching TV in about 1951 (and my eyes are really tired).

How difficult (read "costly") can it be to have someone get the rules right?

Teen Wolf

I'm always bothered by the final basketball scene where the bad guy opponent is allowed to stand on the end line under the goal.

Linking to Teen Wolf wins you the interweb.

I charge a $250.00 per hour consulting fee, less if the movie, or television show, is filmed on the East Coast, more if they have the actor referees wear Byron collars, metal whistles, and shiny black belts.

Off my Soap Box....

Probably a little less costly as it would be to have someone look at all the military uniforms they use in the movies and on tv and ensure they are right - as opposed to just throwing them together.......

Hope you're feeling well Mark.

And can the actors please get a hair cut before putting on those uniforms?

There is never any excuse for a missed call in the final seconds of a game in any movie, any where, any time.

The games all end in slow motion.

It's worse in baseball movies. Bubble vests, hats backward, wrong colored everything, ridiculous mechanics, BLUE JEANS, no hat / wrong hat, etc.

Not to mention the fact that Mick should have been ejected earlier for either a flagrant foul or accumulated intentional fouls ;)

Most egregious violation is Scott lusting after Pamela when Boof (Lisa) is clearly 10x hotter :D

If you ever get a look at the movie "Blue Chips," you'll see Shaq dunking the game-winner at precisely :00.0. Shaq was in slow motion, yet the clock in the lower right corner ran down normally. I wonder if Shaq used his Kazaam magic to make that happen.

Another one: One of my favorite series was The Wonder Years. There was a basketball story in one of the later episodes, where Kevin Arnold's high school team lost a big playoff game, filmed at the L.A. Sports Arena. The year was 1972, but that didn't stop the clock from counting down in tenths of seconds.

I was told I'm the only one who notices such things. Isn't that a good thing in an official?

Mark Padgett Thu Jul 11, 2013 03:12pm

There was an episode of Perception on two days ago and in it there was a HS level game in which a mascot (a guy in an alligator suit) stabbed a ref during play. The thing I noticed the most is that the ref was using a metal whistle.

I didn't notice if he was wearing a belt. ;)

It drives me nuts when TV and movies screw up the officiating scenes. Guys in wrong uniforms is my worst pet peeve. You would think Hollywood would find someone who would provide proper information to them.

But like my wife always tells me: "You are the only person in the world who would notice something so petty"

grunewar Fri Jul 12, 2013 01:37pm

Fixed it for you.....

That someone should be me. See post #8. I'm available for consulting on any NFHS rules, uniforms, etc.

A bad segment that bombed IMO. A lot of "forced" laughter there.....I could barely watch it.
