Can a player run out of bounds to make a play?

End of regulation, St. Marys guard dribbled in the lane, threw a pass and then ran out of bounds on the baseline. He then came back in to hit a game tying three pointer. Is it legal?

I had a feeling someone would open up a thread about this.

No, it isn't.

NCAA 9-4-1
A player who steps out of bounds under his/her own volition and then becomes the first player to touch the ball after returning to the playing court has committed a violation.

I am surprised no one mentioned it on the broadcast. Well, not really!

The rule is similar in NFHS. The difference is in H.S. the violation is called when the offending player steps out of bounds.
