NFHS Intentional Foul (Flagrant, Ejection)

I was told the following; Player A1 dribbles ball, then B1 pushes A1 from behind to purposely foul and cause clock to stop but A1's momentum carries their body into the scorers table.

The officials in this game did up their Intentional Foul call to Flagrant Foul and ejected B1. Team A was awarded 4 shots (not sure why) and possession of ball.

What can determine an Intentional Foul to increase to flagrant and ejection?

Can player B1 still receive a 2 game suspension?

If it was only one foul, then only two FTs should have been shot. Maybe there was a second foul?

Suspension is a state issue.

What can cause an upgrade to a call? Additional information from another official. Sometimes, one official will have a better look at a play and suggest an upgrade. Also, since there is no flagrant foul signal under NFHS rules, they may have just gone up with the X's to signify they had something more than a "regular" foul and didn't want to just go up with a fist.

As to why A was awarded 4 shots, I can not tell you that. If all they did was upgrade a foul, and nothing else happened, then they got it wrong.

As to the suspension, I don't know, nor care as it's not my jurisdiction.

How did the person that relayed this to you know that it was initially an IF, and then upgraded to FF? Are they guessing? With what you describe, and the number of shots taken, I have to wonder if this was an IF followed by a T for some reason (perhaps something said that the person relaying this to you didn't hear).

In Va. just getting tossed is one game suspension. Two games if a punch thrown. Copied from the VHSL web site below.

(15) The fi rst time a player or coach is ejected from a contest for unsportsmanlike conduct,
he/she shall be ineligible for the team's next contest. A second ejection in the same sport in
the same season carries a minimum two-game suspension penalty. A player or coach who
engages in fi ghting, biting or aggressive physical contact shall be ineligible for the team's next
two contests. The second incident in which a player or coach engages in fi ghting, biting or
aggressive physical contact in the same sport in the same season carries a minimum fourgame
suspension penalty. (Note: If the disqualifi cation occurs in the fi nal contest(s) of the
season, the penalty shall carry over to the next sports season for students who are seniors
and to the next school year for underclassmen and coaches.) (See 27-13-6).
