Match Up
Rule3, Section 3 Article 1 e:
A captain may request a defensive match-up if three or more substitutes from the same team enter during an opportunity to substitute. Situation: Boys Varsity A leading 30-0, A shooting free throws, 4 starters from team A reentering between shots and requests match-up. I tell them to match-up and captain repeats he is wants a match-up. I tell him we will play on. As I read this rule he is REQUESTING, I know I could have lined them up but the question is should I have lined them up or what procedure can/should be followed. Team A repeated this process throughout the game (winning 87-18); perhaps me being a butt, they didn't get one. |
No big ceremony or procedure needed and no reason for you to deny their request if they're allowed it...if they request a match up, let them call out who they have...after they're finished, resume play.
|
Tell him you'll give him time to match up, but they aren't going to line up like a YMCA game.
|
I believe that they had plenty of time to match-up, the ball was dead and they had enough time to tell me they wanted me to line them up.
However, I may have been frustrated seeing the starters reentering with this score! |
I Didn't Know That Gene Rayburn Was A Basketball Official ???
Thirty years ago we used to do this around the nearest jump ball circle. Now that there's only one jump ball circle, and there aren't a lot of jump balls, we just have the kids mull around for a few seconds to figure out who has who.
