I can't think of a situation where "the imaginary plane" of the division line would ever come into play. Is there even such a thing?

Two situations under NBA rules:

Timeout request from an airborne player that breaks the midcourt plane.

Also, the ball is considered in the frontcourt when the ball breaks the plane of the midcourt line when not in player control

Not to pick nits, but to commence nitpicking: The NCAA rule and corresponding cases actually only mention momentum carrying into the BC or OB - no mentioning of the vertical planes separating areas. (In case anyone were to want to explain a call, no-call, or rule to an inquiring coach.)
