Not sure about a 36 year ref

I was doing a 3rd and 4th grade game today in which I don't really like to do because alot of these coaches watch Roy Williams and Coach K and somehow become super coaches. I had a ball roll over the top of the rectangular backboard and when it rebounded it rolled off the back..I called the ball out of bounds. A little while later I noticed a older fellow setting on the frontrow and had a offical over there and pointing at me, so I walked over and this ref met me before I got there and told me the guy was complaining that the ball wasnt out of bounds. So I approached him about it and he informed me the ball wasnt out of bounds and in front of people told me I didnt know what I was doing and that he has been a ref for 36 years.I asked him sir. do you have a rule and case book and he just smarted something off. I told him I would be glad to show him in these books why I felt this ball was out of bounds but he would rather try to belittle me.so, after the game I was waiting on him with my rule book in hand rule 7.1.2 sub b and my case book in my pocket. He hurried to his car and ignored me and sped off.am I wrong on this rule????? was it not out of bounds? He told me I was talking about a fan shaped board and I dont understand how a ball could roll on a fan shaped board.

If you're saying it passed over the top of the board, no you're not wrong. I think you're wrong to get into this lengthy rules discussion with spectators, regardless of their credentials.

Your right about spectators but when he kept saying I am a 36 year ref I think he should study his books a little.....I read or watch something everyday and my rule is I don't call nothing I can't explain to a coach then its his choice if he wants to listen. This fellow called a ref over between quarters. If you want to show your 36 years experience at least try to impress the ref your complaing about. Dont call another ref over...

If he was a 36-year official with any sense he wouldn't have done that to a fellow official in front of other people. In this case it would've been better to cut him off as soon as possible and move on.

FWIW, a ball that passes over a fan-shaped backboard (if you can find one) is still in bounds. Sounds like the old timer got it backwards.

Should someone offer unsolicited advice again, just smile, thank them, and move on. If they get annoyed, it's their problem, not yours.

By telling him that the rules have changed a bit since he received his copy of Dr. Naismith's original 13.

I worked Special Olympics last weekend in an elementary school gym with fan shaped backboards. They didn't come into play.

I thinks he's wrong to type out his entire post as if it were a text message.

"I'll tell you what buddy. I have a rule book in my bag. We'll look it up and if I'm wrong, I'll give you ten bucks. But if you're wrong, you have to go out to the parking lot and wash my car. What do you say?"

I've used this and it usually shuts them up.
