Stepping up

Just heard that one of the officials assigned to Notre Dame-Louisville couldn't make it. Conference got a guy who worked the Marquette game to go. Got a rent a car and drove to South Bend and is working the 4 OT game, maybe going 5 if ND scores.

NCAA Official double dips

Well John Gaffney got a nice little pay check. He works a game at Marquette this afternoon and gets a call to go work Notre Dame game tonight. And he gets to work 5 OTs (still not over), basically another half of basketball. He certainly earned his pay checks today.

Peace

Make that 5 over times.

You couldn't pay me enough to work a full game, then another with 5 OTs tacked on to it!

...oh wait, yeah you could! :p

Considering that many of us do about 5 games at $25 a pop with running clock, I thin a check with probably $2500 each would be OK to work both games. ;)

Peace

Two NCAA D1 Mens Games in one day?

How common is it(if at all) for an official to work two NCAA d1 mens games in 1 day. John Gaffney of the Big East did so today/tonight. He worked DePaul/Marquette in the afternoon and then worked the 5 ot game between Notre Dame/Louisville. Supposedly one of the assigned offficials could not get to South Bend due to the storm out east. Here are links to the box scores for each game.

Also for those in the Milwaukee area how far is it to South Bend from Milwaukee

Officials: Pat Driscoll, John Gaffney, Alfred Smith
Officials: Ed Corbett, Jeffrey Anderson, John Gaffney

Good for John. Not ideal but when 1/6 of the country is under 2 feet of snow...stuff like this can and will happen.

Now a 3rd post. :D

It's pretty uncommon, but it happens due to extenuating circumstances.

Supposedly? Sounds like you don't want to believe what actually happened (per ESPNs' bottom line....official Michael Stephens was stuck in Providence, RI).

It's approx. a 3-3.5hr drive from Milwaukee to South Bend, IN. (the trick is getting thru/around Chicago without traffic issues...and surviving the NW Indiana "snow-belt"....on your way to South Bend).

I've never heard of Gaffney's name before - I know little about college basketball officials - but he has both my kudos and my sympathy. Calling TWO Big East basketball games in a day, and one of them went into five overtimes?? That guy is awesome. Hopefully he's got today off, and he's able to rest and revive his legs, as I'm sure he's gotta call somewhere on Monday.

And according to StatSheet, he had Friday night off, but yesterday was his eighth D-1 game in eight days:

WHAT A SCHEDULE. Wow. I hope I don't sound like a mark, but that's what happens when you apply your craft to the best of your ability and people recognize it. I aspire to be at that level on day.
