Part 1 Test Question

Question:

During each extra period, each team is entitled to at least one time-out. T or F?

I answered true, but they say I got that wrong, referencing 5-11-1. What in 5-11-1 makes the above statement false? What am I missing?

It would be true in the second or more overtime assuming the team did NOT use their TO in the first OT.

In OT 1, if a team is out of TO's, then they are entitled to ONLY 1 TO. At least implies multiple.

At least means exactly that, a minimum of one. It could be more if they have carryover but they are entitled to a minimum of one per OT period. I'm not sure how that question could be false.

The statement is true. They get at least one, maybe more if they have some others left.

To say they only get 1 is wrong since they might have more.

I would agree but these statements are to be taken as is 100% of the time.

Saying they are ENTITLED to AT LEAST one is assuming that they have at least one extra carry over. If they have NO timeouts left then the statement is false.

Therefore the statement is false because we are assuming that the statement is taken as complete truth. That cannot be true since we do not know, and the statement does not say if there is one carry over.

Huh? If they have ZERO at the end of regulation then will have at least one on OT. What the heck are you talking about?

The question -- and the rule -- says "during" the time-out. "During" means the overtime period has started, but not yet ended. As soon as that OT period has started, each team is entitle to an additional time out.

I have TRUE.

At least, implies the minimum and that there could be more.

So having at least 1 TO would be that I could also have 2 or 3, etc. That is what I think the question meant.

So, I get at least one, and if I have more, I can use them. But, I have at least one timeout.

I still don't get how this statement, as is, is false. I get what you all are saying, but the question needs to be worded better if they want to get it to say that.

And it should still be true. Once the OT starts, they will have anywhere from one to six. That's at least one. No linguistic gymnastics can make this statement false.

Yes, we also agree that it's TRUE.

Let's take what you substitute for "at least" and put it in the OP's question

During each extra period, each team is entitled to, at minimum, at least one time-out. True or false?

What about that is false? Each team IS entitled to at minimum at least one time-out per extra period.

Im just looking at this from the authors POV. And with these questions they usually aren't as cut and dry as they should be.

Could just be that the answer key is wrong. Wouldn't be the first time and won't be the last. Then again, we also know that when it comes to NFHS, that they aren't the best when it comes to the written word.

Not sure if this is the Fed test or if Wisconsin puts out their own. Rich, you would know.
