Michigan/Indiana Block (Sanzere call 1st half)

My apologies to OKREF. This is the play at 10:13 of the 1st half he was asking about. It's also described in the other thread as the call where Sanzere has a block but it looks as though Valentine was going to go with a PC.

Yes this is the one. I have a PC here. Just don't see it as a block in any way.

Put your hand behind hour head (or don't), that's a PC IMO.

Yup, this is the one I was thinking of when I saw the other thread.

I've got PC all the way.

Maybe not a block but it appears the defender has arms all over the offensive player prior to any contact that would have been ruled player control. So maybe not a block but an illegal use call with the defenders arm because that certainly is not vertical??? Thoughts?

Any contact with the arms is incidental here. The major contact is the offensive player's torso going into the chest of a defender with LGP.

Verticality would not even enter my mind, or that of any of the officials' I know and respect, on this play.

Sanzere was not in a position to see the arm contact, only Valentine would have seen that.

THIS is exhibit #1 in why a play is much easier to officiate when it is coming towards an official rather than away from one. Teddy V is the only crew member that would have a GREAT look...others are basically guessing.

Disagree in this case. C may not have gotten it right but that doesn't mean he didn't have the best look. C just didn't officiate the defense on this play.

Given the plays we've posted in this forum I think we've seen there is more of a chance of the L kicking this type than the C. If this was a T to L call I'd be more inclined to agree since neither would be calling across the lane.
