Ball Lodged in Ring on Free Throws
NFHS rules. I found nothing in the rule book or case book, but I know it has to be in there somewhere. This is what I've always thought:
The ball gets stuck in between the backboard and ring on a free throw attempt. A. First of multiple free throws: violation on thrower B. Final free throw: possession arrow decides who gets to inbound the ball. C. Front end of a 1 and 1: I'm guessing possession arrow again but I'm not sure here. Ruling and citation please. |
Free throw to be followed by another free throw: just like any other miss
Free throw not to followed by another: AP |
Rule 6, Section 4
ART. 3 . . . Alternating-possession throw-ins shall be from the out-of-bounds spot nearest to where the ball was located. An alternating-possession throw-in shall result when: d. A live ball lodges between the backboard and ring or comes to rest on the flange, unless a free throw or throw-in follows Also, the free throw shooter has not committed a free throw violation by causing the ball to become lodged...he's met his requirements of releasing the ball in 10 seconds, not breaking the plane of the free throw lane with his feet, and causing the ball to touch the rim. |
