This is a correctable error under NBA rules.

My understanding is that this is perfectly legal as long as the 6th waits until the goaltender is within 5 feet of the bench before entering the game.

Interesting. According to the article, this essentially becomes a do-over. Re-set the game and shot clocks and wipe out all the action that occurred with 6 men on the court.

Is that really how it's handled? Is there an exception for flagrant or technical fouls that occur while 6 are participating?

It's only a "re-do" if the team that had the correct number of players chooses so. They can choose to resume play from the point of interruption...which is what happened in the play above.

And no, points from technical fouls, flagrant fouls, and punching fouls are not wiped out.
