Whistle to end period?
Is it required for the official who has last shot responsibilities to whistle to "end the period" after the buzzer has sounded?
|
And away we go...
I do it. Don't remember if current IAABO or Fed manuals call for it. NCAAW manual does. |
I had a partner tell me I need to do it because the quarter isn't officially over until the whistle sounds. I don't remember reading that anywhere but wanted to double check.

I only do it if I have responsibility for the last-second shot and there is going to be a shot that needs to be ruled on. If someone is dribbling around in the backcourt I don't see a reason for it. It works for me.

Not addressed in the FED manual and varies by area, association and sometimes from crew to crew. I've heard:
1) No whistle necessary ever...that's what the horn's for. 2) Always whistle to end period. 3) Only whistle if there is a shot close to the horn and you want to a) count it or b)wipe it. Pet peeve of mine...with all the nit-picky rules we are expected to know about things like wardrobe, scorebooks, etc. you'd think the FED would address this as it occurs at least 4 times per game. |

We are told to keep any extra whistles at bay. So no whistle here.
|
To blow or not to blow.
I choose not to blow as the horn/LED ends the quarter, half or game.
|
Just goes to show all of this is local. I'd feel like something was missing without a whistle at the end of a period. Or a whistle to bring in subs.

Exceptions ???

Friends, Romans, Countrymen....
Around here every "R" seems to be from a different Rome....
I quit blowing except when the horn was "quiet" and just take the "corrections" for what they're worth. |
Whistle to end regardless. I work with people who don't and it seems odd to end without the whistle, especially when the shot is close to the horn. When it's not close, still seems weird, but I have no issues with it. I will blow it regardless of situation though, just like subs.:)

We only whistle if there's a shot in the air at the buzzer. In such a case, the period isn't over until it's apparent that the shot is good or no good or the airborne shooter returns to the floor. That's why we have a whistle. Otherwise, no. |

Around here it's taught to NEVER blow the whistle to end the period or to bring in subs unless there's an extenuating circumstance (horn non-functional, partner about to put ball in play, etc).
