Dunk and hanging on the rim.

1:30 on the video

Does anyone have a problem with the first dunk for hanging on the rim?

Peace

Unless I'm viewing the wrong clip, I've got absolutely nothing.

JetMetFan Sun Jan 27, 2013 02:03pm

You mean #11 for Curie? I can definintely see calling it since he dunked facing the walll and managed to turn around while holding on to the rim before he came down.

APG, the play is actually at the 1:48 mark of the clip.

The video is at the top for High School Lites #2 (1/25/13). I was having a problem for the video to play with the link I used for some reason.

If I'm watching the correct play (number 11 in blue dunking the ball) then that's absolutely nothing in my book.

I went ahead and added the clip to the original post.

If you haven't already, watch the video all the way to the end to see a good story officiating and the community.

Hope I look THAT good at 59.....especially since I don't look that good at 52!

Thanks but for some reason I cannot see the embedded version.

Hard to tell from the angle, but given the number of players around and the way he went to the basket, I'd give him the benefit of the doubt on the "prevent an injury" exception.

What is no one was around him? Would you have anything?

More likely given the swing-and-turn (as I recall -- I didn't go back to the video)

Not me. Not even a second thought. He changed directions, but it was fairly quick. Given these kids need to land, I'm giving every benefit of the doubt to the player.

We had a player hang on the rim last week after a missed dunk -- he really didn't have a lot going on around him, but he wanted to be sure he didn't land on someone -- he carefully looked around himself before simply dropping straight down. No showboating, change in elevation, or change in direction.

I was perfectly fine with this, as was my partner. The other coach, though, wasn't -- he ended up picking up a technical foul from my partner for his trouble. I think a good part of this came from the fact they were getting waxed at the time, though.

Raymond Sun Jan 27, 2013 06:44pm

Closest thing to a T would be for taunting on his last dunk. Lot of jawing going on after the play.

Me.....probably not. It was very brief and nothing unusual for a basic dunk. It looked more like the result of letting go with one hand slightly before the other or not actually getting the rim frimly with both hands. Nothing wrong with that.

Check out 2:58, looks like someone included a player-control foul in a highlight reel!

Edit: Also check out 8:02, from the sound of the whistle I surmise he got a tech for that.

If we are looking at the same thing (Part 1 8:02) then the answer is no. He did not say or do anything. He just ran up the court.

Peace

You got nothing for hanging on the rim?

Nope. Didn't call anything when it happen and we even talked about it at halftime. That is why I asked as it was discussed by the crew. And if that is bad, then there better be a T for every dunk IMO.

I presume a hanging on the rim T should be pretty obvious? Like a kid doing a pull-up with no one underneath him?

It should, essentially, call itself. Don't be a plumber.

That is fine but if you consider that a pull up, well it is obvious we see this play philosophically differently. I do not consider a pull up to be someone forcefully dunking the ball and not expect some level of swing or hang. The rule does not say all hanging on the rim in itself is illegal.

Don't go looking for s**t when it is not there.

In other words, if you call this there might be more questions than if you leave it alone. This looked like a rather common dunk that no one but those that do not see dunking very often would call IMO.

Call the clear and obvious...these type of calls will call themselves.

Ask Freddy. He's what you call an expert.

I got a better question, where is #11 heading next year to play. He looks like a man amongst boys.

This was my initial thought. The only dunk where I would even think about anything was near the 8:03 mark of the clip by #2. Still not close to a T IMO. From my experience those that would consider Ts for any of these dunks are those who don't see a lot of above the rim action in their games.

None of the dunks by #11 being discussed earlier were anywhere on the radar of a T.

JRut, which play were you asking about in the OP or was discussed in the locker room?

He's a junior and looks like he has received offers from all of the major B1G programs as well as Kentucky, FLA, FSU, Baylor, and possibly KU.

He's only a Junior, so he probably hasn't made that decision yet.

We discussed the first one and then it resulted in the second one being discussed in the same context. It was only discussed as mostly a "You did not have anything there right?" Of course my partner did not as he did not call anything, but it was discussed if that might have been close. My two partners had a much better look than I did as I was the Trail on both plays. And these plays happen about 2 minutes into the game. It was a typical 1st half discussion in the locker room about plays and situation that someone had a question about because it was a highlight in the game.
