I think some people see an airball on a first free throw and just say, "no point next FT," when in actuality the whistle should sound and rule that it is a violation, if nothing else to avoid this situation.

Once the shot is taken, it is too late in this case. You can't go back in time and call a violation, even if it was a rule oversight that ultimately let to an impact on the score.

I agree. Just using common sense I would think if you were going to call the double violation it should happen before you administer the next free throw.
