Spectator coach

Hi guys, I am new. I look forward to learning from the forum and asking you about my weird situations.

I was working 6th grade tonight. As I was administering free throws I noticed one of the players not in the lane (he was outside the 3 point line) standing near the sideline opposite the scorers table. Standing with him (outside the court) was a spectator who was giving him advice. What do the books say about players interacting with spectators?

I initially whistled and pointed at them to separate. The man thought I was whistling for him being on the court, yelled "I am off the court" and resumed talking to the player. I did not know what the rule was, so I resumed the free throws. They had maybe a 30 second conversation, and the players coach seemed fine with it.

Unless theres some unsportsmanlike or otherwise inappopriate behavior going on, leave 'em be.

At the sixth grade level it was probably a parent who thinks he knows more than his child's coach.

Do you tell the parents in the stands to stop coaching as well?

Don't go looking for trouble. Enough of it will find you.

We had this once in our kids rec league. One of the parents who did sometimes sit on the bench with the team (assistant 10yo coach:D) positioned himself on the stage at the end and was shouting very specific instructions to the team. We ran him off, citing two rules, coaches on the bench, and nobody is allowed on the stage. The second rule is not always strictly enforced.

If it becomes a big deal, use 2-3 to handle it (or get "game management" involved, which I recognize can be a problem at some of these types of games)

This past Friday, I had a JV Boys game and decided to stay for the first quarter of the varsity game.

During the Varsity game, home team's ball boy (5-6 years old maybe), would run off the bench and into the home stands facing the opposition to lead the fans into waving signs, hands, etc. to distract the visiting free throw shooter.

I certainly wasn't expecting to see that. :D

Actually, it's a zero-zero tie. ;)

Mark:

Zero-zero tie? You give them too much credit. I would have it as a tie too, but the score would be in the negative number range.

Work long enough and you will see this kind of behavior a lot. And it is especially the case with a former coach or former player where they think they know more than anyone else. Just laugh about it and move on.

Peace

Parents coach from the bleachers all the time. Had a freshman game Saturday where the coach was telling his players to sag down on defense while some jackal behind me was screaming at his son, "ball pressure!"

Had a game last week were someone/anyone needed to yell "ball pressure " towards the end of the game as the home team let the visitors turtle with the ball with a 4 pt lead.
