Thumbs up Happy Anniversary basketball

According to "The Oregonian" newspaper, today (Jan. 15) is the 111th anniversary of the day Dr. Naismith published the original rules of basketball. In the paper's humor column, it said "And officials in NBA games have been ignoring them ever since (unless the original rules allowed certain players to go, oh, a half-dozen steps without dribbling, in which case they've done a great job).

I think the column writer hit it right on the head.

Any of you throwing an anniversary party tonight?

Hey Mark Padgett? I always get this mixed up. Did you go to high school, or college, with Dr. Naismith? I do know that Mark T. DeNucci, Sr. dated Dr. Naismith's older sister.

Math isn't a primary focus for Oregon journalists and editors.

I emailed the editor who oversees that column and told him they were incorrect. I hope he turns on his Commodore 64 before tomorrow to get my message.

I used it. Told the captains, and coaches, what a special day this was for basketball. They weren't impressed.

I had a boys freshman/JV doubleheader. At least I celebrated appropriately.

Dr. Naismith started the men's basketball program at the University of Kansas (my mother's alma mater). Dr. Naismith is the only KU men's basketball coach to have a losing record for his time as HC and coached HoF KU coach Fog Allen who coached Adoph Rupp and Dean Smith (Wilt Chamberlin was a teammate of Smith's) during their playing days at KU, thereby connecting three of the most successful men's college basketball programs.
