Knee Arthritis

Been having problems in one of my knees. anyone got any suggestions for relief?

Twinfan Fri Jan 04, 2013 10:31am

This is one of my problems, limited options until you get to the point of a knee replacement. In order of effectiveness, here is what has helped me: 1) Lose weight 2) Ice and Aleve after games 3) Reebok Zigs

No magic bullets.

Whatever WebMD says to do. Or your doctor.

A lot is going to depend on your age and joint history. I had pain last season and ended up getting an MRI and arthroscopic surgery on one knee to clean up my meniscus. Three weeks of therapy and I was back pain free.

Find a good orthopedist that works with sports injuries.

Short of that...Advil and ice.

Be sure you are not using the Joey Crawford block mechanic...puts undue stress on patella:rolleyes:

What the other guys said. Plus, you should check with your doctor. You might have knee-monia!

All this helped me too..dropped weight and the Zigs..I swear by them and wear nothing else on or off the court..plus they look cool!

I also wear chopat straps to help my knees track right...you can find them at any sports store.

I am currently recovering from Knee arthroscopic surgery

I have terrible OA in this knee. Go and get it checked out.

Be careful which Zigs you get.

Because the Zig Energies were not in stock in my size anywhere, I got these (Zig Activate)...

Reebok ZigActivate - Men's - Running - Shoes - Black/Excellent Red/Pure Silver

and can NOT recommend them. They feel great walking around but after running 2-3 games in them, both of my knees and ankles where hurting and hurt for 2-3 days. I switched back to these

Ultimate Patent Leather Basketball Referee Shoes: Ump Attire

and the pain stopped within 1 game.

Those particular Zigs just have NO lateral support. They are "Running" shoe and are good for straight line running but stops, cuts, turns, etc. will expose their lack of support. It puts a lot more stress on the knees and ankles and caused me a great deal of pain.

I live with moderate OA in my left knee medial side. Little to no cartilage in there. Doctor doesn't want to do a replacement until I'm a bit older. This isn't just a basketball/officiating issue for me.

I keep it under control with ice as soon as possible after the game and anytime I feel some swelling in the knee. I just finished 8 weeks of PT twice a week with daily exercises at home designed to strengthen surrounding muscles. I use Ibuprofen as needed and I find Icy Hot on the joint applied before a game can help a bit.

I also have an "unloader" brace. It looks a bit like an ACL brace but it's designed to push the load to the good side of the knee during activity. Here's a link to one of the manufacturers though there are many with essentially the same technology and brace. It is sometimes helpful when the knee is acute. The cost of mine, I think it was about $600 was covered by my medical insurance.

Freestyle OA Knee Brace | Breg Inc.

Consider looking into hydrolized collagen.
