May a player "roll up" his tights to make his illegal equipment legal? If so, must he come out of the game and roll them up on the bench, or can he just roll them up as a player on the court without coming out of the game?

That reminds me. I have to shine the "Fashion Police" badge that the NFHS pinned on my uniform.

Yes, he can roll them up. Since you would have seen this during warmups, tell him then so your second question becomes moot. If you fail to do so, then if it can be done quickly, have it done. If it takes awhile, then send him out so as to not delay the game.

I just had to deal with this last week. As the R for a JV game I took care of the visiting team during warmups by telling one kid to roll them up, then pointed to another and said "You too big fella." There were two more who got the hint that the FA-PO was on patrol and complied when they got my quick grin and a nod. I should have gotten with my partner though, because we had to delay the tip when one of the home team players had to take off his leg compression sleeve thingie. We were all standing around, ready for the tip, looking at the kid and the coach as they tried to slip it over his shoe. The kid was laying on the floor in front of his bench like he was getting a hamstring stretch. I'll bet if there was a hole in the court they both would have jumped in it. This, combined with a lot of fouls in the first half made the varsity officials none too happy about the late start though. (I'm not even sure where to start with the can of worms involved if I tell the coach "Take him off to the side. Let's have someone else start the game." So we waited the 45 seconds or so that felt like ten minutes.)

The whole team wore warmup pants during the pregame drills. I didn't catch the tights until a few minutes into the first period.

Leg Compression Sleeves ???
 

Are you sure that the "leg compression sleeve" is illegal?

3-5-3: Arm compression sleeves shall:
a. Be white, black, beige or a single solid school color.
b. Be the same color for each team member.
c. Meet the logo requirements in 3-6.
d. Be worn for medical reasons.

Similar to socks, I don't believe that the NFHS has any rules regarding leg compression sleeves. None. No color restrictions. No medical reason restrictions. And probably no logo restrictions.

What's everybody else think?

Like Billy said, there is no rule on leg sleeves at this time....only tights. Since there is no rule against it, anything else on the legs (that is not unsafe) is legal.

"At this time"? Please. Let's not give the NFHS any ideas. Don't you know that the NFHS monitors the Forum 24/7. I think that I can hear the NFHS black helicopters overhead right now. Guess it's time to put the tin foil over my computer.

He's wearing illegal equipment so you direct him to leave the game. How he corrects it at that point is not our concern.

To me that's the simplest way to go about this to prevent a bunch of "what if's?".

For some reason, my brain wanted to add "or deceptive" to this part.

Anyone seeing kids wear these newer compression shorts that have pads? They remind me of a football girdle.

They ARE football girdles. Cleverly marketed as something different for basketball players to pay too much for.

As for the leg sleeves, I ran into this at a BV game yesterday. They have the "hex-type" padding on the knees just like the shooting sleeves have on the elbows. So my partners and I decided we were looking at knee pads. Play on.

The problem arises when the wear the legs sleeves so that they extend from under the shorts, over the knee. Until now, tights were easy to spot. But a t a glance, it's almost impossible to now know whether they're wearing leg sleeves or tights.

I just ask, "Are those tights?". If they answer in the affirmative, then I tell them that they can't play while wearing them. If they answer in the negative, then, as far as I'm concerned, they're legal. I'm the "Fashion Police", not a "Fashion Detective".

You'll never make sergeant with that attitude.
