The BIG CHOP

Quick Mechanics Question:

As the trail, when should I be chopping the clock when the lead is handling the throw in?

A) Only when the throw in takes place in front court and remains in front court

B) Only when the throw in is in back court and heading towards front court

C) Both situations

Thanks!

A)Around here they want us using that mechanic.(May be optional/frowned on in your area(
B)You are the one administering the throw-in so you have to chop.

In B the Trail is administering throw-in, you are the new lead.

Trail should always be either mirroring a chop or chopping in time himself.

According to the officials' manual 2.2.2 C6 ... End line throw-in in the frontcourt.

Quick Mechanics Answer:
A) Only when the throw in takes place in front court and remains in front court

Quick Mechanics Commentary:
I don't like this mechanic. It's not like the clock operator can't see the lead chop time in order to know when to start the clock. Shucks, most clock operators, right or wrong, just start the clock when they see the ball touch a player inbounds. But, more significantly, what other time would one like me to watch something that occurs outside my primary when there are things going on in my primary? I predict it'll be two more years and they will abandon this mechanic. Alas, as long as it's the approved mechanic, I will do it. Not that I like it.

Personally, I can "see" it in my peripheral vision -- it's not like I stare at the throw in.

I doubt it's going away.

I doubt they'll change the mechanic...it's really not that difficult...one can see when the ball is touched by periphery without ball watching. Heck, we were doing this mechanic in Texas before it was approved by NFHS.

Plus isn't it quite possible the throw-in ends outside the Lead's primar
y?

And this.

I am fine with the mechanic but truth be told in my area where we are working two person games, the timer probably isn't looking at the officials for a chop signal anyways.

Trail chops in all situations.....Just think about where the ball is and which way you are going, and what position you are in.

Both...in B, the trail is the inbounder, the official at half court is the new lead. Trail always chops the clock.

Timers do what they want. We had a ball go out of bounds at the end of a quarter recently and I held my whistle a split second because I didn't want my whistle on top of the horn.

The timer stopped the clock with 0.4 seconds left without my whistle blowing, like it was his job to make that decision.

Oh that's for sure. I had one in a game last week with :04.2 seconds at the end of the third start on a throw in as soon as the ball was released. Since the team throwing in was throwing from the back court and made it a short throw, I hammered my whistle and went over to correct him. I think he was surprised I even saw the clock.

As I stated in a previous post, I saw a HS ESPN TV game last week where with 2.17 sec left in the game, a baseball pass by A1 traveled 3/4 the length of the court and was knocked/tipped OB by B1.

The clock didn't start.

The refs got together and adjusted the clock to 1.86.
