Quick T
I was working a freshman boy's tournament and it was the title game. I am the lead and the ball goes oob oposite sideline from me. My partner whistles and calls V ball. The H coach goes crazy and says pretty loud "no way!" My partner explains to him " i got it off white coach, green ball". H coach says again "no way" My partner with a stern but calm voice says "that is what I saw coach." Coach then yells "That's terrible" My partner now rings him up.
I just thought it was interesting since this took place about 2:30 into the game. We shot the freethrows and before we were done he sit down. He never stood up again or said one thing to us the rest of the day. Seems to me that the Coach didn't pick his battle very well. This early in the game over an oob call doesn't seem like the time to be so upset. |

This won't be the last time you'll be befuddled by a coach's behavior.
I once gave a warning to a coach 10 seconds into a game. (AAU game) Once T'd a coach 4 minutes into the first game of the season. (GV)

Honestly I would not have had a T here because after I gave my explanation, I'm putting the ball in play right away.

I'm not responding to those statements at all.

Putting the ball in play and not commenting on everything a coach says ends pretty much most discussion and prevents unnecessary things from popping up. Your partner already told him what he saw, going back and forth, IMO, does nothing good.

Unfortunetly the ball was being put in play during the end of it. The problem was the throw-in spot was in the coaching box.

I think my biggest improvement in dealing with coaches in the last couple of years is learning to ignore statements if they're not persistent, profane, or personal. Most of the time they'll get the hint and move on pretty quickly. If they don't, penalize them accordingly.

If your partner is putting the ball in play, then he doesn't need to worry about addressing the second "no way"...let the coach get the last word in in this situation IMO.

I probably should have pointed out that on the terrible comment there was a hard finger point and it was yelled loudly. |
