1st Varisty Game Tomorrow Night
From knowing the teams I don't expect it to be a closely contested game however I am excitied about being selected to do a varsity game so early in my career. I am worried about being overwhelmed by the quickness of the game. Any advice?

My Advice ...
Stay in your primary. Have fun.
|
Relax, be confident, and have fun.
You're ready or you wouldn't have received the assignment! |
Congrats!

As told to my by another poster in my "first varsity assignment" thread:
Slow down, call the obvious, and don't suck. Remember: after you blow the whistle, you have all the time in the world... the game won't start again until you're ready. |

You may be surprised to learn that, in a way, calling varsity boys is actually easier than calling a game involving little kids.

I survived it.
The score wasn't close (47-17) but I learned alot thanks to the great partner I had.
#1 I was so focused on not missing the action I was missing some mechanics a. mirror the start clock as the trail in the frontcourt b. coming up sharply with my stop clock signal c I rushed a few times #2 I need to opperate wider as the trail. The team was guard oriented and worked out wide, this was a change from the Middle School I had been doing. Overall I learned alot. It is a blessing to be working with a vertern partner who is willing to help. The next day I worked the championship game in a freshman tourny and did a much better job with my mechanics thanks to him. |
Just enjoy it. You'll find it to be easier than sub-varsity level. The game is (or should be) much cleaner and you'll find that it's easier to stay alert.

Just like when I started with MS, F, and then JV games..... Then I worked my way up to a full VG schedule. Again, starting out with better schools against "not so much." I am still working my way up and now do a 50% VB and VG schedule. If I stayed at this schedule I would have no complaints. I am not "there" yet and still have much to learn. It's a process. Coming up slowly did me good. Continued good luck! As you note, there's always something to work on! |

That's funny. Too bad the newer guys aren't in on it. Maybe someone can pull up that old thread.
