The Big Rule Change

Had my first game with the scorer wearing stripes. It didn't help, as the timer was wearing the same thing.

I have yet to work a game where the scorer actually had one. The usual response is "we just ordered one" or my favorite, "I thought it was just a suggestion?"

So I guess that the rule change for next year will be that only the official scorekeeper will wear horizontal black and white stripes, and that all others at the table must not wear horizontal black and white stripes. Kind of like the free throw rule: The defense must be in the first marked lane spaces, the offense must not occupy the first marked lane spaces.

Batting .500 here. "On the way from Honig's right now..."

I like the rule. Rather than looking for a set of eyes from amongst four people, not only need to look for the one set of two.

Funny you say that, walked out to find the exact same thing last night. explained to them the rational behind the rule and i think the light bulb came on.

Also had a guy wear a pinny (sic?) which would of been ok except it was yellow with diamomds on it  my guess is the AD just grabed it from the chain gang stuff right before kickoff err tipoff.

Also had a partner relay a story where a guy just stuck a mshsaa state patch on the sleeve of his shirt :rolleyes

So pirates can't be official scorekeepers?

I like our instruction: "If they're not wearing stripes, don't deal with it."

BktBallRef Sun Dec 02, 2012 12:38am

NCHSAA, "We couldn't care less whether they wear them or not."

I wore the stripes for a varsity girls tourney out here last week. Then went to do stats for our JV team at a tourney over the weekend.three courts-none of the courts had the official scorer wearing the stripes.

They are taking it seriously in Texas - at least for varsity games. If the scorer isn't wearing stripes, we're supposed to report the school to the state governing body. However, our assigner wants us to notify him first and let him handle it. So far every school I've worked has complied. The ladies have come up with creative fashion statements, but as long as they are wearing stripes, all is well.

I have had every varsity scorer in stripes so far after two weeks of games.

Same here in Montana. In addition to reporting it to the state, we've been instructed to find the AD after the game and subject him/her to a flogging in full view of the remaining crowd.

So far, I've seen about 75% compliance. The only problem we have is that we wear grey pinstripes for HS games...thus some of the scorekeepers are now wearing grey pinstripes, which are not nearly as visible (which was kinda the point of zebra stripes). I asked one scorekeeper where she got her shirt..."An official from your association donated it". Sometimes we are our own worst enemy.

Nine games in and every scorer wore stripes. One game both timer and scorer wore stripes.
