Ben Wilson, Jr. and 1984 state championship.

Watched the "30 for 30" film last night about Ben Wilson, Jr. Ben Wilson's death resonates 25 years later - Chicago Tribune

They showed the 1984 Illinois high school championship at U of I. The surprising thing to me is they were still using fan-shaped backboards.

I guess why would that be surprising? It was not until later in that decade that they started to use the rectangular type I am not mistaken at most levels.

Peace

2yrs after Ben was killed (when I was a Soph), I played against some of those same players in some of the same gyms in the 30for30 documentary.

The Simeon coach started a tradition of having the best player on the team wear the #25 - in honor of Ben. I was guarded by the first player to wear that number after Ben - Mario Bailey (they used a box-n-1 defense). He was 6'5"....I was 5'10".......yep, you guessed it....we lost by 25pts.

I still consider that an honor.
