Throw In Part 2

Had 2 state finals officials DISAGREE on this scenario:

A1 on a throw in from end line..ball hits the bottom of the backboard?

Live Ball or dead ball (Throw in violation).

Thanks!

The bottom is in play.

That said, if the ball caroms back towards the end line, then the ball hit the back of the backboard, not the bottom.

If the ball caroms straight down or farther onto the court, then the ball hit the bottom of the backboard.

For the one who thinks it is a violation, what rule or case play is he/she citing?

Generally agree but I'd say that if it comes straight down, it had to at least partially hit the back as that is the only surface that can stop the ball's forward movement.

True, if the bottom isn't padded. The padding can mess with the trajectory.

Not true if there's a pad. Also not true if it hits the corner just right, which would make the ball not spherical for a moment causing it bounce to not be true. (And you can have a sphere contact the corner without contacting the back)... not to mention spin, which is likely backspin on a one-handed throw-in.

My interpretation is that if the ball hits the floor closer to the end line than the bottom of the backboatd when projected to the floor, it is deemed to have hit the back of the backboard and is therefore an illegal throw-in.
