First Varsity Assignment!

Just got my first varsity assignment! It'll be a girls game in some sort of tournament. Can't wait for November 15th!

Thanks to all you who have answered a question of mine, no matter how silly.

Congrats, enjoy, let us know how it goes, and most importantly - don't forget rule #1! :p

Speaking of that, haven't had a Padgett report in a while.......

Stiff -

Just remember that the players will be a little bigger, stronger and faster and what neccesarily is a foul in a jv game may not be a foul in a varsity game......

Good Luck !!!!!

That's great! Call the obvious and don't miss the obvious. Good Luck!

My Two Cents

... and in my opinion, a varsity game is usually much, much, easier to officiate than a subvarsity game.

Good Luck !!!!!

Yet, at the same time, don't change anything you've been doing. You'll find yourself in more trouble if you try to change what you call and don't call than if you just overcall the game a little bit. The more things you try to change, the more you'll mess up.

There is a time to adapt to the bigger/faster play but I'm going to guess that the specific game that he got for his first Varsity assignment isn't one where he needs to worry about that.

I've kind of been taking it easy after my heart surgery and I'm residing in an assisted living center. That's why I haven't been posting lately, since I'm not on the computer too much.

Rule #1 hasn't changed, though. ;)

Good to hear from you Mark.

Continued best wishes for a speedy and full recovery.

Congrats on the V assignment!!

Congrats

Try to get someone to video record it for you. As you progress, it will be a good record of your progress.

Bravo.

Perhaps in addition to most misunderstood basketball rules we may add most understood officiating truisms -- such as "Basketball gets better the higher you go". No it doesn't. Delusions of grandeur grow exponentially when athletes move up the laddler.

Let us all say a silent prayer for brother and sister officials who are, even as we speak, being assigned to provide some structure to subvarsity basketball.

These are the true saviors of the sport

I will always believe that the game gets easier to call from a judgment standpoint for sure. The athletes are in more control and have been playing longer and have some experience in the game. Same goes with coaches. Now the pressure can get bigger because more eyes are watching and more scrutiny on calls and other stuff we do. But I do not find that delusional, just a different perspective.

Peace

I remember back in the 1989 Fred Barakat (old supervisor of the ACC) saying that the easiest game in the ACC to work was UNC / Duke. He just needed three guys that could handle (manage) Dean and Coach K

The same applies on all levels..........

Dematha / Gonzaga ( DC Catholic League )

Roman Cath vs. Neumann Goretti ( Philly Cath. League)

Boys & Girls vs. Lincoln ( NYC Pub. League)

These are all easy games to work..... kids can play through more contact and
defend better and there is better coaching.
I was fortunate to work at Slam Dunk at the Beach in Delaware back in the day............... those games were easy compared to your suburban hack fest with 10 white kids who are all 5'11 trying to play like they are 6'2".

The irony is that Stiff may have to make more decisions on this game than on some of the jv games he worked this past year.................

If you can handle a girls pre-conference-season tilt in November, I'd wager you can handle just about anything.
