I got a guy who should be sent home by his country..........

The look on his face after the incident says it all.

riverfalls57 Wed Aug 08, 2012 03:01pm

Not sure he's worth $10 Million a year.

JugglingReferee Wed Aug 08, 2012 03:08pm

At minimum, UNS.

With a small lean to the Disqualifying foul. Though likely I'd stick with the UNS, just as the calling official did.

Wow... point deduction

Nice close down from the slot!

What's the over-under on how long the IOC will allow this on YouTube?

Anyway, speaking in NFHS terms, although I believe he was going for the balll -- er, the BASKETBALL -- you have to go INT here. I wouldn't have a problem if someone went flagrant.

Raymond Wed Aug 08, 2012 03:32pm

In my rules sets I have Flagrant PF and a FF2.

Same here. It's going to be hard - though not impossible, of course - for a coach to argue with an ejection on that type of play.

Well it was longer than a minute. I was able to capture the play for my training purposes. ;)

Peace

That's a punch and easy flagrant foul/flagrant two/punching foul. Batum said he did that because the Spanish team was flopping/embellishing the entire game. The final straw was probably a couple of plays earlier where Ronnie Turiaf was called for an unsportsmanlike foul where in reality, the Spanish player just threw his legs under himself and fell to the ground quite easily. A soccer player would have been proud.

Still, no excuse for that kind of play and easy disqualification/ejection.

Guess this is an authorized version

Maybe I need a bigger screen. I thought B1 hit the ball.

He hits his nuts??? Ok, that's a see-ya.....

BktBallRef Wed Aug 08, 2012 08:38pm

I'm tossing him. I think he's tossed in NCAA and NBA as well, after review.

More pictures from the "scrum"

Let's just say the refs "interjected" themselves into the situation.

Well, he did hit the basketball but that wasn't his intent. I've never seen someone go for the ball with a fist like that. After he hit the ball (more in a glancing hit than direct) he hit his nuts.

Right, and even if he knocked the ball loose with his fist it would be a violation anyhow.

As a HS official, there have been many a discussion on this board on what to do in case of a fight or heated discussion.

Do you stand back and watch? Take numbers? Let the players self-enforce? Coaches? Do you ever physically touch a player? Push or hold a player? etc.

I was simply posting pictures of how this/these officials handled this particular situation.

I like how they handled the sitch!

No matter the level, MS-Pro, I think if you can get in there and prevent escalation by seperating them... do it!
If its too far gone (multiple punches being thrown) sit back & take numbers.

Depending on the games participants, I tell em in pregame "no bull**** tonight, any non basketball will be punished to the max."

As opposed to never putting your hands on a player or never holding back a player during a fight and that player getting hit while you are holding them.

Good rule of thumb...but in this instance, no "fight" had started yet, and the officials got in the way and got "Nuts" Batum out of there quickly so a fight wouldn't get started. JMO, but I like the way they handled this situation.

constable Tue Aug 14, 2012 05:55am

Now that I've seen the play in both slo-mo and real time, I concur with the unsportsmanlike foul.
