Hey all, just going over some odd situations that happened this past year. Here's one I'm not sure how to properly manage:
I am lead along the endline and A1 ends his dribble directly in front of me. He panics due to some defensive pressure and throws a backward pass to teamate A2 who is open near the Trail official. However, defender B1 slightly tips the ball after the release of the pass and it sails into the backcourt as a result. I immediately give a tip signal but my Trail is screened and I don't verbalize the tip (should I?). A2 is the first to touch it there and the Trail called a backcourt violation. How do you proceed from here? Thanks for your responses. -CRef |

Blow your whistle so your partner will not quickly put the ball in play. Then go to him/her and relay the information that the ball was tipped in your primary by the defense. If that official does not have other information (such as a subsequent tip by the offense), he/she should change the call and give the ball back to the original offensive team. It is the responsibility of the official who made the backcourt violation call to change the call. If he refuses to change the call, let it stand and go on.
As to your question as to whether or not you should verbally react to the tip by the defense, do not do it! That is just one more situation where doing too much talking on the floor can get you into trouble. |

But he can be placed in the book for a T. I don't know if that's what they want to do, though . . .
