You make the call- Blake Griffin's dunks on Pausol

Former NBA official Mike Mathis said illegal elbow, PC foul.
But NBA director of officials Ronnie Nunn said legal elbow plus and1.

Mike Mathis said over the back foul by Griffin.

I like Mike

I agree with Mike Mathis, on both. In the first video, the elbow, with contact above the shoulders, comes way before the shot, and in the second video, the contact from behind comes way before Griffin gets to the ball, IMO.

Really? There's no such thing as an "over" the back foul, only an "on" the back foul.

Posted this because I had nothing else to do this morning.

Ronnie Nunn didn't say it was a legal elbow...he said it was a legal armbar that just happened to catch Gasol up high. Subsequently, the defender went through the offensive player, thus the foul. He also mentioned that they had to discuss the play with in the League Offices for a bit before deciding what to grade the call.

I'll say in real time, I would have had an offensive foul. It was close. As to the possible loose ball foul, I have nothing.

On the first one I can easily see a call on Griffin as the elbow is used to sheild off the defender to complete the dunk.

On the second one I would pass as Gasol put no effort to block out or keep anyone from the basket. Of course there is going to be some contact there, but not enough for me to rule a foul in that situation.

All easier to see with replay than in live time.

Peace

Agree...foul on Griffin on both.

Not an excuse. There absolutely, positively, has to be something from the Law and Order archives on television right this second. It's never not on.

Mathis is right - this is a PC call.

Maybe times have changed since Mathis worked on court.

First play Gasol creates the initial contact with Griffin going into Griffin's chest followed by Griffin's action with his arm.

2nd play I have nothing as I see the contact as marginal and incidental. Gasol is actually attempting to move backwards and to his right when elevating, into Griffin's path.

+1 on both. Might have been a different story in first clip if Gasol stayed in his vertical plane.

Mathis can't technically be "right" in this situation.
