NBA numbers question
 

I was watching the Nuggets v. Lakers game last night and I had never noticed this before but players are wearing what would be considered illegal numbers under high school rules.

I noticed it when the official went to report a number and they had to do a 1 with one hand then they brought up two hands for the number 6.

It looked weird and I didn't like it.

So I'm assuming NBA players can wear any number they want? or what's the rule there.

And what's with the "Los Lakers" jerseys?

It's *always* been this way. George Mikan wore 99, Julius Erving wore 6.

I pictured you more as a 14 or 17 guy.

It seems like years ago in high school the home team wore even numbers not higher than ending with the digit 4, and the visiting team wore odd numbers not ending higher than the digit 5. I suppose it had something to do with the numbers of fingers on each hand. I guess you couldn't ref if your nickname was Nubsy back in the day:..................:D

I remember in an old yearbook photo before my time, the players wore 11, 22, 33, etc.

There are no "illegal" numbers in an NBA game but you typically don't see players go above 50 or so for whatever reason.

I want to see a player with the number Pi. :D

Or even just 123456789.

Those would be fun for the official to remember and report! ;)

A player could try and get his number changed to that...but Front Office and League Office would have to approve it, and I highly doubt they would.

Plus, I'm guessing officials would just start reporting the name rather than the number. ;)

Our local football chapter was going to get a set of numbers for a 6-man crew: 0, pi, e, i, infinity, and -1.

We have some math geeks and we'd know that e^(i x pi) = -1. :eek:

I never claimed to be observant...especially when it comes to the league. I watch college more than I do NBA. But I don't have much to watch right now :(

Actually had to do that tonight in a spring league game. White didn't have numbers on the white side of their reversible jerseys. Had to ask for their last names.
