Congrats, Hank!

Reggie Miller got the headlines, but our Forum should send a collective "Attaboy" to Hank Nichols who will be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame this year, right here in Springfield, MA.

Congratulations, Hank. Well deserved!!

I saw this news. Great for his years of service and we are better for what he has been able to bring to officiating. Good for him and the officiating community that benefited.

Peace

Tremendous leader, trainer and coordinator.

Possibly the worst mechanics I ever saw. :D

During the local sports talk radio show here, they were discussing the Hall of Fame electees (and how local coach Guy Lewis should be in)...then went off on a little bit of a rant wondering how a referee could ever get into the Hall.

Interestingly enough, Jeff Van Gundy and Chris Mullan were both lauding the fact that Joe Crawford and Dick Bervetta were working a game together (the fact both of them had officiating in the NBA longer than some of the players had been alive) and that they were both future Hall of Famers...

Anyhow, congrats to Mr. Nichols http://forum.officiating.com/images/icons/icon14.gif

When Hank (he is a member of IAABO) was the NCAA Men's Rules Editor he would address the IAABO Fall Interpreter's Meeting every year concerning the NCAA Men's and Women's Rules changes every year. I remember two humorous incidents from those meetings.

The first one was one year when the NCAA and NFHS both made the same rules change. I don't remember what the rule change was now, but I do remember that the late Dick Schindler was in attendance in his capacity as the NFHS Rules Editor. There was quite a bit of buzz about this particular rules change and there many different opinions about it. Dick addressed the NFHS Rules Changes in the morning session and these differing opinions were brought to his attention. He gave his interpretation but he said that he would look into the situation in greater depth when he got back to Overland Park, Kansas (the NFHS and NCAA Headquarters were both in Overland Park, Kansas, back then). That afternoon, Hank addressed the group and before anybody could ask any questoins he gave an interpretation which was the opposite of Dick's. When it was brought to his attention, he thought for a moment and then laughed and said that maybe the NCAA Rules Committee hadn't thought the rule out to well.

The second one invovled a bull session one afternoon after lunch when a young official asked Hank: What would cause him to T a coach. And Hank answered without missing a beat: "When he acts like an idiot."

I should add that back then one could pick up the telephone and call Dick or Hank at their offices and get an interpretation straight from the horse's mouth so to speak.

MTD, Sr.
